Amy Spencer's book DIY: the Rise of Lo-Fi Culture is finally out.

Behind a very niftily-designed cover (by Michal Cupid with an illustration by Rachel Slampt), Amy traces the origins of today's zine/underground music/anti-corporate culture back to the old underground presses, early mail art, the SF fanzines of the 30s, and so on, and describes the ideas behind these cultural currents. She quotes or interviews everyone from skiffle musician Chas McDevitt to Gina Birch to Richard Hell to Tribe 8's Lynn Breedlove to a bunch of interesting people I'd never even heard of before.

I had no idea Amy was going to cover so much ground in this book. It is astonishingly wide-ranging, but clearly and concisely written - although she is doing a phD at the moment, there's no trace at all of any academic jargon. It contains lots of useful stuff I didn't know (which, oddly, includes the real surname of someone I've known for over a decade)!

Yeah. Though it's not one of those knock-you-between-the-eyes books, it's straightforward and practical and sums things up really well. A lot of ground covered very quickly and succinctly. There's no index, frustratingly - hopefully there will be an opportunity to fix stuff like that in a future edition sometime.

Be warned - you'll tut over certain factual howlers - the book was delivered very late & some mistakes were left in (e.g. she says the Gang of 4 were London-based), and some conclusions are (as you'd expect) arguable. But it's a clear, useful book, which communicates perfectly the simple practicality of Doing It Yourself.

I'm wondering who the surname person is...

Could be a major selling point: "surnames of surname-less scenesters will be revealed!"

Delia, scenester extraordinaire, who really does know everyone and has been in about three hundred bands as well as being involved in a bunch of other stuff in and around London rock'n'roll... & Rachel Rocket/Slampt/Red Monkey's real name is in there too, which I knew once upon a time but had forgotten.
