This journal is a memorial. New entries cannot be posted to it.
This week's celebrities in our store have included Charlie Higson (very unassuming, didn't realise it was him until I looked at his credit card) & his son, and Pete Shelley (who comes in fairly regularly, but is always worth mentioning). But these are eclipsed by E, an ex-colleague who now works in an architecture bookshop. Yesterday she served Laurie Anderson and her boyfriend LOU REED. Lou fucking Reed! They were really nice, she said. So I guess he's only nasty to journalists. Heh heh.

What do you care about Lou Reed? You've met Patti Smith.

Me and S have a game that involves going "Mr Reed! Mr Reed! I love you!" in high pitched voices. If I ever meet him I'll have to say that to him.

Did you see the Observer Music Monthly interview with Patti? I got a link to it on a Yahoo group. Very interesting.

Yeah, she describes her sexuality as "normal," ie not a dyke. Pfhtht!

Sime is the one you should talk to about it, I am in my "over her" phase.

I'm not sure that's quite what she meant... seemed like she was being a bit apologetic for being old-fashioned. I think she's slightly self-conscious about being expected to be a sexual outlaw or whatknot when actually she likes it missionary-position and only on Friday nights, you know?

You're generous!

Yeah, but it was crappy the way it came out.

I'm really not the person to be talking to about her!

You know Lou and Andy on Little Britain is based on a sketch they did with Andy Warhol and Lou Reed?

One of my good friends is good friends with Laurie Anderson. When I was visiting California recently and having lunch with this friend, I was like "So, did you go see Laurie when she performed here recently?" and she was like "Oh, no I had to miss it, but she came over for dinner instead."

Hee.

Ah, well. Back in the early 80s he had a post-punk-funk band called the Higsons. They did a popular single called 'I Don't Want To Live With Monkeys' and a later one called 'Got To Let This Heat Out' which was the inspiration for Robyn Hitchcock's song 'Listening To The Higsons' (and if you know the RH song, yes it does sound like CH is singing 'gotta let this hen out'). I once saw the Higsons at my then-girlfriend Mandy's college ball in Yorkshire. They played in one room, while in another there was pomp-rock Cristian plodders The Enid. I popped in to see a bit of the latter and there was just one guy standing listening to them. (This might sound sad if you haven't encountered The Enid. It isn't.)

The reason he's an actual celebrity, though, is because he was one of the main people behind the Fast Show, a comedy show which ran in the UK for several years in the 90s (and counts Johnny Depp among its fans). If you've seen the show, CH plays Ralph the aristocrat who's in love with Ted the gardener, among others. They relied less on straightforward gags than on building characters and establishing catchphrases. It was very good.

Lou Reed went up to one of my friends at an art show and called her "a beautiful creature."

Not sure how I feel about that, really.
