Songs-R-Me

*
OK, this is an IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.

I want to do an MA this Autumn. I've never been to college before but I can do this one without having a degree. I'm applying this week, but even if I'm accepted I'll have to raise three and a half grand or so (3,552 of our English pounds, to be precise) to do the course. Probably have to get a loan, but I want to avoid that as far as possible, so...

I propose to fund my course partly by pinching an idea from the singer-songwriter Momus. When he got sued a few years ago, he invited people to contribute to his legal fees by sending him some personal details and some money, and he would write a song about them. These were eventually compiled on an album.

Now obviously, I'm hardly as well known as he is. But I'm no slouch when it comes to songs, and I love the challenge of being commissioned to write. Plus, I'll go one better, by offering to write a song about anything the donor wants to hear a song about.

I'm posting here mainly for ideas on ways to do this. I reckon minimum donation would be fifty quid, I'll reserve the right to turn down any subject I don't want to write about (just in case of nastiness), and I'll probably start off by creating a new LJ where people can go & ask about it, then look for ways to spread the word further. I'll record on my four-track with minimum instrumentation, send the donor a tape of their song, & compile them on a CDr for all donors when there's enough. Beyond that I haven't really thought about the details. Suggestions?

What is the MA in? An MA that doesn't require an undergraduate degree? Is this a rip-off, a scam degree that anyone with any salt will sneer at? If this is legit, please sign ME up next in line behind you - but what is the discipline?

Ha, it's Gender, Culture & Politics. Not a scam, but not likely to land me a job, either - just a field I've been interested in forever & always wanted to study properly.

That'll go over well over Valentine's day, I bet.

Do you do Valentine's Day in your far-off barbaric country? :)

We do, but it involves eating wildebeest and marrying one's relatives.

I'm in. I think Jad Fair does something similar. I'm happy to pay you fifty quid. Where do we go from here?

Woah, fuck. That was quick! Thanks! Well, I need to iron out the technical details first - I want to do it above board in terms of tax, etc, & want to sort out those aspects before I think about the creative side. But obviously, since you're already offering, I will do that immediately. Once that's sorted, I'll get back to you - say Wednesday - & discuss the subject of said song, etc.

Thanks again!

OK, hop on over to [info]mistersongs and suggest a song...

The song is on its way (after a comical series of technical mishaps, and the apparently permanent closure of my local Post Office). The Post Office in Camden assured me it would arrive by the end of this coming week, but I'll try & get an mp3 made too just in case... I do hope you'll like it. It's very daft. We'll talk about payment when it arrives, hopefully in one piece, OK?

I think that's a great idea, I wish I could afford to help out with cash like that because the MA sound wonderful as well. I had a really inspiration conversation with another lj friend in the pub the other night about her dissertation topics on sex workers.

I am currently struggling with debt after finishing my degree in the summer but i wish you all the best and I hope you keep us updated with how it goes.

hmmmmm

Could you write me a song about gin, plastic dinosaurs and hair dye?

(And what would you call the album, vanity pressed?)

Re: hmmmmm

I reckon I can. As for the album title, that'd have to wait until the songs are written!

I have no suggestions but I think it's a fantastic idea and I'll definitely be participating, even though I can't really afford it!

Glad to see you back on LJ.

Very original. You know where to come if you need a drummer for your recordings. jx

Ooh, good idea. I think I'm going to have the 'official' start in April - by then I'll know how much publicity I'm likely to need, y'know...

EX-Cellent...

That's a really cool wheeze, and I do hope it works for you. I know I'd love to participate, but a glance at my LJ will reveal why that's ULTRA-impossible. If I get a decent lottery win, though, you'll be high on my list-
